No-one is certain how tartan originated, but the wearing of colourful checked cloth was favoured by the Scots as long ago as the 16th century. The weaver used a "thread count" as a guide, to ensure the pattern remained the same from generation to generation. The finished cloth, or plaid, six metres long and two metres wide was wrapped round the wearer at the waist.
The tartan design you see today, now more than 60 years on is based on the Taylor and Graham Clan tartans which were the surnames of two jaycees who started the international movement of Junior Chamber back in 1943. The JCI corporate blue is linked by the fold to commemorate our 50th anniversary.
The design was endorsed by Junior Chamber International at World Congress in Hong Kong and was then registered with the Scottish Tartan Society as the 'Junior Chamber International Tartan'.
The JCI tartan is unique to our organisation, with members both past and present eligible to wear it as their own.
To many of us Scots, tartan is emblematic of something heroic and indefinable and it is with great pride that Junior Chamber Scotland share this part of our heritage with our fellow Jaycees the world over.
We invite you to browse our range of items and take a bit of Scottish heritage to your part of the world.
